Presentation of the McLaren Artura Spider

In June 2024, the Uncovers team had the honour and privilege of testing the sublime McLaren Artura Spider in its magnificent Volcano Blue hue.

The test drove for 24 hours from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to Grasse.

As soon as we left Maybourne Riviera, a breathtaking palace overlooking the Principality of Monaco, we knew we were in for an exceptional moment. The enchanting setting of this luxury hotel was just the right setting for this extraordinary supercar, which we couldn’t wait to get our hands on.

The Maybourne Riviera - drone view

Perched majestically on the cliffs of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, the Maybourne Riviera is much more than just a luxury hotel for Côte d’Azur residents. Imagine suites where every window opens onto a constantly changing landscape, where the blue of the sky and the sea blend harmoniously on the distant horizon. Each view is truly enchanting. Although the hotel may appear massive at first glance, the major renovation work that has been carried out is to be commended. The flowing lines, glass railings and imposing bay windows let in a great deal of light and bathe every nook and cranny. The Maybourne Riviera (ex. Vista Palace) has (re)become a must-visit address on the French Riviera, the perfect starting point for getting behind the wheel of the McLaren that is just around the corner.

Last year, we already had the pleasure of testing the McLaren Artura first generation, for a 300-kilometre road trip in the Var. Our memories of that test drive were still fresh when we attended the presentation of the new Spider and second-generation Coupé.

The brand’s team of engineers gave us a detailed presentation of the various developments made to what was already an exceptional supercar.

The McLaren Artura Spider, a hybrid supercar, embodies a perfect fusion of cutting-edge performance and open-air driving pleasure. As we drove through the hinterland of Grasse, with its winding roads and breathtaking scenery, we had the chance to fully discover the capabilities of this automotive marvel. Every bend, every acceleration gave us the adrenalin and excitement that only a supercar of this stature can offer.

McLaren Artura Spider: a remarkable technological evolution

The McLaren Artura Spider represents a significant advance in automotive technology and design. This hybrid supercar benefits from a series of improvements that further enhance its performance and driving pleasure.

Performance and engine

Under the bonnet of the McLaren Artura Spider is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 hybrid engine, now developing a combined output of 700 bhp. This configuration, coupled with an electric motor, delivers blistering acceleration: 0-100 kph in just 3 seconds, and a top speed of 330 kph.

The transmission system has been recalibrated for 25% quicker gear changes, guaranteeing greater responsiveness. This performance also translates into a 0 to 200 km/h time of 8.4 seconds and a 0 to 300 km/h time of 21.6 seconds, impressive figures that testify to the incredible power of this supercar.

It’s only in racing situations, or with measurements taken by engineers, that the improvements made in this area will be obvious.

Nevertheless, anyone who sits in the second-generation Artura and compares it with the first-generation car will notice an improvement. Better responsiveness, even greater efficiency – in short, an even sharper car.

Chassis and suspension

The carbon fibre chassis of the McLaren Artura Spider is a true masterpiece of engineering. It offers exceptional rigidity while being extremely light, which improves handling and driving precision. The latter is absolutely stunning. The quality of the chassis and the brakes literally blew us away. The first-generation Artura was already surprising, but the second generation is even more so.

The Proactive Damping Control suspension, improved to react up to 90% faster, adapts instantly to changes in road surface and driver input. This advanced technology ensures a stable and comfortable ride, even on the most demanding roads. We found this to be the case on some tricky stretches of road near Gréolières. As for the Lift-Up option, we felt it was an absolute necessity, given the height of some of the speed bumps we encountered.

McLaren’s carbon fibre architecture (MCLA) is so robust that, unlike many convertibles, no structural modifications were required to accommodate the new retractable hardtop. As a result, excess weight due to the architecture of the mobile structure is minimal.

Air intakes on the rear axle, specific to the innovative aerodynamic design of the Artura Spider, supply essential air to the transmission pre-coolers, while optimising aerodynamic efficiency.

Braking system

The McLaren Artura Spider is equipped with ceramic brake discs and new cooling ducts that improve thermal management and extend the life of brake pads and discs, especially in sporty driving conditions. With braking from 200 to 0 km/h in just 124 metres, the British supercar ensures powerful, stable deceleration and boosts driver confidence during high-speed braking.

Transmission and responsiveness

The McLaren Artura Spider’s 8-speed transmission benefits from a new hydraulic pre-fill feature, enabling gear changes to be made 25% faster. This technology optimises performance by minimising the time required to engage a new gear. The electronic differential (E-diff) integrated into the transmission improves stability and agility by adjusting the differential preload in real time, offering even more precise and responsive driving.

Driving modes

The McLaren Artura Spider offers four driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Track and E-mode (electric only). In Comfort mode, the electric motor and hybrid engine work together for a smooth, economical drive. Sport and Track modes use the electric motor more aggressively for rapid acceleration and instant throttle response. E-mode provides up to 33 km of emission-free driving, ideal for quiet, eco-friendly city journeys.

McLaren Artura first and second generation comparison

The second-generation McLaren Artura Spider represents a significant evolution from its predecessor. The first-generation Artura had already impressed us with its introduction of hybrid technology in a supercar. The new generation McLaren pushes the boundaries even further.

Power and performance

The new Artura Spider benefits from an engine that has been recalibrated to offer an extra 20bhp compared with the previous version, bringing total power to 700bhp. This increase in power translates into even more impressive performance, with acceleration and top speed that rival the best supercars on the market, despite a smaller displacement and the presence of only 6 cylinders.

Weight and structure

The new Artura Spider is the lightest convertible supercar in its class, outweighing its rivals by up to 83kg thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre. The reduced weight improves not only performance, but also the car’s agility and responsiveness. The brand’s DNA is fully respected here: Light is Right!

Driving technology and comfort

Technological improvements include 25% faster gearshift times thanks to the new hydraulic pre-fill feature, and an even more responsive Proactive Damping Control suspension. Driving comfort has also been improved with a new cooling system and adjustments to the suspension and chassis.

McLaren Artura Spider Monte-Carlo

Our opinion on the McLaren Artura Spider

The McLaren Artura Spider exceeds all our expectations in terms of performance and innovation.

We really enjoyed the first generation, but this one goes even further. Right from the start, we were impressed by the ease with which this supercar could be tamed. Despite its 700bhp, the Artura Spider remains surprisingly smooth and manoeuvrable. It offers an ideal intuitive driving experience, which will delight both sporty driving enthusiasts and inexperienced drivers or those who prefer a softer ride. The E-mode, which is particularly useful in urban environments, transforms traffic jams and stressful manoeuvres into moments of calm and serenity.

An efficient, engaging, high-performance and fun car

The brushed metal gearshift paddles are not only beautiful to look at, but also very pleasant to handle. They offer a pleasant tactile sensation with every gear change, and further strengthen the bond between rider and machine. Every time you press the paddles, you feel more at one with the Artura and are encouraged to exploit its potential to the full. Although the automated gearbox is perfectly optimised, in dynamic driving the paddles add an extra dimension with impressive precision and responsiveness.

The comfort of the Clubsport seats, with their lumbar adjustment, deserves a special mention. The long hours spent behind the wheel of the Artura Spider are made more enjoyable by these seats, which combine sporty support with long-distance comfort. The support offered by these seats is optimal, ensuring ideal posture and minimising fatigue.

The Artura Spider’s retractable hardtop is a masterpiece of engineering. In just 11 seconds, it deploys or folds away, even at speeds of up to 50 km/h. This speed makes it possible to switch from open-air driving to an enclosed cabin without interrupting the driving experience. The incredible visibility offered by the design of the roof and windows enhances safety and the feeling of immersion in the surrounding landscape.

The lift-up option is essential for those who plan to drive the Artura Spider in urban environments or on secondary roads. It raises the car so that it can negotiate speed bumps and other obstacles with ease.

The electrochromic roof is another technological marvel. In an instant, it can go from completely transparent to completely opaque, blocking out over 99% of UV rays and reducing heat inside the cabin. This advanced technology makes it possible to enjoy pleasant brightness without the inconvenience of excessive heat, providing optimum comfort for driver and passenger.

It is important to note that the Coupé version of the new Artura benefits from the same technological improvements as the Spider. McLaren has ensured that every aspect of performance, ergonomics and technology is optimised to deliver an exceptional driving experience, whether in coupé or cabriolet form.

What’s more, McLaren hasn’t forgotten first-generation Artura owners. They are being offered a free update that includes a 20bhp increase in power and updated engine mapping. This generosity on the part of McLaren underlines their commitment to their customers and their desire to ensure that every Artura, whatever its generation, remains at the cutting edge of technology and performance.
